Last Saturday I’ve witnessed Habibeats, a wonderful Dabke party in Kortrijk’s De Kreun. DJ Matrub is a highly skilled, highly specialized connaisseur of this ‘Levantine folk dance‘, an ancient dance form and contemporary musical practice, probably known by most people since the Syrian farmer and wedding band specialist Omar Souleyman took the international stage with his high energy interpretation. I loved it, to see so many gorgeous people engage into this communal Levantine dance form, in a strange, but intoxicating and highly addictive, off beat rhythm. I can’t remember when I’ve had this much fun on a dance floor, among total strangers!
