Many years ago during a WOMEX edition, I met Werner Graebner, who curates the wonderful series Zanzibara (distributed by Buda Musique, highly recommended for lovers of Ethiopiques). Somehow I’ve missed some volumes, in my collection I only refound 1 – 5, but volume 10 is about to hit the shops. Again I am struck by the lush harmonies and gorgeous rhythmic sensibility of this particular kind of East African music. This is the tune which got me involved, back in the day: Maulidi Mohamed, Vingaravyo Vgote Si Dhahabu, from Zanzibara volume 1 (Jahazi Media/Buda Musique, 2005). The Buda catalogue doesn’t mention volume 10 yet, but you can check out the other titles ici. The late Bi Kidude is btw also a voice you don’t want to miss..
